Countdown to Christmas!
One of our family traditions with my husband’s side is a Secret Santa gift exchange. Not 1 exchange but 2- one done before lunch and one done after!
We each bring one $25 gift and one $50 gift. Since my hubby and I have three kids, we are responsible for bringing ten gifts total. No matter how much I plan, I always have one or two gifts that I’m scurrying to get at the last minute.
My goal is to find gifts that appeal to a range of ages that the recipients won’t stash in the back of a closet or send to Goodwill in January.
I look through gift lists in magazines, blogs, and such for inspiration and new ideas. So I thought why not share some of my favorite gifts I’m bringing this year to our Secret Santa (and a couple hits from the past)?
Hoping this gives you a little inspiration for your gift giving!
PS) Most of these gifts can be found on Amazon or at your neighborhood Target, Walmart or even Walgreens. Here’s the holiday shipping calendar for Amazon. Their “order by” dates are later than you might think!
The gift that anyone can use: MONEY
Each year, I place one cash gift in our exchange but I just can’t put cash in a boring envelope for gift giving. Here are three fun ways I’ve given cash as a gift:
1- Hidden inside an umbrella (similar to this)
2- Hidden inside a box of candy- remove the candy, fold the bills up small and put a bill in each candy wrapper spot. I wrote on the gift tag: My momma always said, “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”–Forrest Gump3- Folded up and placed in a small picture frame. Fold the money so that Benjamin, Andrew or Ulysses’ face is in the center of the frame.
TaoTronics Wireless 4.1 Magnetic Earbuds- We bought several pairs of this exact model last year for gift giving and have heard rave reviews from the recipients. It’s a very good price (less than $30) and you get great quality:
Marpac Dohm-DS All-Natural Sound Machine– This summer, our friends hosted us at their farm in Franklin, TN. We slept like babies. Our hostess had thoughtfully placed a Marpac Dohm Sound Machine in each guest room. One of these Sound Machines is going to our Secret Santa (with an eye pillow and lavender sleep spray). Crossing my fingers that I come home with this:
Stir Crazy Popcorn Popper– I surprised myself with how popular this gift was last year in our exchange…even the hard to buy for college kids wanted it. I guess we’ve forgotten that popcorn doesn’t have to come from a waxy, white microwaveable bag. Nostalgia is fun! Package the popper with a top quality popcorn and some seasonings.Experience Type Gifts
Last year, I took my sister on a Food Tour in Atlanta for her Christmas birthday. She lives there, so I drove down for the day and we had such fun doing something totally outside our usual experience together.
Think about your town…do you have a ghost tour, a history tour, a film festival, cooking classes…? If needed, make the gift certificate yourself and if at all possible, go too! Spending time with a loved one is the very best gift.
Wishing you and yours happy gift giving (and receiving)!
